A pub formally public house (a house "open to the public", as opposed to a private house), is a place where alcoholic beverages are served and consumed. The pub is an important part of British culture and Lambourn had many pubs in the past. With a change of social drinking habits the number of pubs has reduced and now Lambourn has three pubs trading. Names like The Red Lion, Sawyers Arms, The White Horse and The Lamb have been consigned to the history books.
The history of pubs can be traced back to Roman taverns through the Anglo Saxon alehouse to the development of the modern tied house sytem in the 19th century.
