The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust (Hungerford Branch) would like to encourage more people to volunteer as crew on The Rose of Hungerford. It is a great opportunity for all ages to help a very worthwhile cause and also to have fun and enjoy themselves amid the beautiful scenery, wildlife and historic buildings on this beautiful canal.
I can vouchsafe for this as I have been volunteering for over year and really look forward to every trip. I do outside crewing and have recently qualified as a helm. Although each role is quite specific and training is full and comprehensive, no day is like another and we all help as and where needed. A volunteer, once trained, could be steering the boat in and out of locks and turning the 55' boat round in a 57' space one day and operating the locks or helping passengers enjoy a delicious cream tea the next. They could be acting as an inside host talking to and looking after our passengers and also running the fully licensed bar serving snacks and refreshments. We do public trips and private charters so our passengers are all there for different reasons. From a last minute idea for an afternoon out or a long-planned party, to a poetry evening or a musical afternoon playing and singing ukuleles.
There really is infinite variety with a fun team of likeminded volunteers. We all crew with each other, so the team is always different and it gives a chance to meet all the other volunteers. The time we give is flexible as there is an online crew rostering system which means we can sign ourselves in for whichever days and times suit us. Obviously the more the better, but there is no regimented requirement for a volunteer to give a particular day a week so it is flexible and easy to fit in with any other commitments.
