Lambourn Chimers May 2016
Lambourn Chimers was started following a talk about the history of handbell ringing at the local WI. Some of the attendees then went to a workshop run by the speaker. As a result of this workshop, four of us started to play regularly, with borrowed handbells, in late 2002.
Since then, we have obtained lottery funding to purchase bells and bought other equipment from local charitable donations and our own fundraising efforts. The group has grown to eleven ringers and the number of bells to over 30.
We joined the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain (HRGB) and have attended some of their rallies, picking up hints and tips along the way. Those of us with no musical background have learned to read music as we've progressed.
We play at local functions and now have a wide range of music in different styles to offer. We have performed in local churches, and also played at Hungerford Resource Centre, Aldbourne Nursing Home, Lambourn British Legion, Lambourn Christmas Fair, West Berkshire Community Hospital and nearby WI branches.
We also run a weekly bell club for children at Lambourn Primary School for part of the year. Bell Club members have the opportunity to play in public. Our first workshop for interested children and adults during the Stockcross Festival in 2014 was well attended.
